CHAPTER 20
The beef stew calmed my nerves, and I decided that for today I would go and explore the house instead of reading more even though I was itching to. I started walking toward the gardens when I bumped into Andy.
âAnne, could I see you for a minute. I want to go over the guest list.â
âOf course, but Iâm not sure I will recognize anyone on the list.â We went to his office, and I saw a tome sitting on his desk.
âI would like you to take this list and study it.â He walked around his desk.
âStudy it?â I looked at the book, suddenly petrified. I didnât even study travel books in detail.
âIâd like you to memorize as many of the names as you can and let me know if youâd like to add anyone else to the list. Thankfully, the invitations will be going out late this year so there will probably not be as many people who come, but itâs best to be ready,â Andy said as he handed me a ten-page, twelve-point-font list of hundreds of names, where they were from, what companies they ran, and what relations they were to Sir Anthony.
âThis is daunting, but I can do it,â I barely breathed out. âI thought you wanted me to go over that big book on your desk,â I laughed.
âI was, but many of these are deceased or wonât be invited this year. I took the liberty to comb over the initial list already. I hope that was okay,â he said in all seriousness.
âNo, thatâs fine,â I said, thinking, how does someone know so many people? And thank goodness I donât have to memorize the book. I glanced through the hundreds of names, dazzled by the Lords and Ladies, but also by all the names of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and nephews, and grand-grand nieces and nephews. Would the whole family really be coming to the gala? I suddenly started wondering if this was such a good idea. It seemed there were people from all over the world. I looked up at Andy and must have had a petrified look on my face. I surely felt like I had frozen and couldnât move.
âDo not worry. No one expects you to remember every single person on this list. I just want you to remember as many as you can. It might make you feel more at ease to know a little about those who are invited and what they do.â
âYes, I agree. Thereâs . . . just . . . so . . . many . . .â
âThe gala will not be for another month so you have time. Let me know who you want to add today. Iâll have Ben go into town tomorrow to get the invitations ordered and sent out. Weâll rush them so they go out by this weekend. Also, when you can tomorrow, sit down with Cook to go over the menu. She has done it for so long she has
